Last night our OCL Regeneration team joined representatives from Hampshire County Council’s Highways team and Milestone Infrastructure to receive a prestigious International Green Apple Environment Award 🍏 for the combined efforts around the Highway Materials Recycling Facility in Micheldever, Hampshire.

The recycling facility for highways waste became operational earlier this year and now is processing large quantities of excavated road material for re-use across the Hampshire network resulting in significant carbon savings and reduced reliance on freshly quarried aggregate products.

Stuart Gready, managing director of OCL Regeneration, said:

“We are delighted to receive the Green Apple Silver Environment Award. It recognises the work we have been implementing across the organisation for many years and the commitment of the OCL team to help the UK make a major change and the wider sustainability practices we have adopted as a business too.

He added:

“It has been a great week for the climate imperative in my view. Mixed opinions on COP26 range from full-on flop to relative success, for me the pro’s outweigh the cons. Meeting fellow award winners at the Green Apples tells me that there is a tangible shift in mindset around climate post COP26. I think we are witnessing a consensus being reached, old minds being won over and action taking place. Our project in Hampshire is just one example of real-world sustainability and carbon reduction projects taking place now. And that’s what the world needs, action now, not in a year.”

Genuinely innovative solutions are currently being developed at the Micheldever site that will eventually be used on local roads and place the County Council at the cutting edge of material re-use and recycling technology.

The Green Apple Awards are run by The Green Organisation – an international, independent, non-profit, non-political environment group that began in 1994 to recognise, reward and promote environmental best practices around the world. The venue for the Green Apple Awards was moved from the Houses of Parliament to the nearby The Royal Horseguards Hotel in Whitehall Court, London.

“I think we are witnessing a consensus being reached, old minds being won over and action taking place. Our project in Hampshire is just one example of real-world sustainability and carbon reduction projects taking place now. And that’s what the world needs, action now, not in a year.”
